As the weather starts to cool it’s time to perform your yearly fall garage door maintenance. If there are any issues with your door, especially misalignment, worn parts, or cracks, the rough conditions of winter will only amplify the problems. If left unchecked, these can result in the need for expensive replacements or repairs. Fortunately, spotting issues early means they can be repaired quickly and for less while ensuring you get the best lifespan and use out of your garage door.
Test The Balance
Start by performing a balance test on your door. This test checks to see if the springs that open and close the door are too tight or loose, each scenario puts stress on the opening mechanism and can cause serious breaks. To check your balance, close the door and disconnect it from the opener by using the red release cord. Next, open the door to about waist height manually. Let go of the door, and if it stays in place, your balance is correct. If the door begins to fall your springs need to be adjusted, if it pulls up, they’re too tight.
Examine Visible Parts
The next step in your maintenance routine should be to check all of the visible elements look for any rust, bends, or significant dents on the tracks. Next, check your cables for fraying, excessive wear, and rust. Lastly, take a good look at the hinges to be sure that they are not rusting or need lubrication.
Check The Seal
For your final step in the maintenance routine, give the rubber seal at the base of your garage door a good look over. You’ll want to check it while the door is both closed and opens to see if there are any gaps, cracks or worn areas. Not only does this seal prevent rodents and animals from entering your garage, but it helps keep your garage from getting too cold.
